  • GIMP stands for GNU Image Manipulation Program.
  • It doesn't and will never cost anything to download, because its development is supported entirely by donations. It is also open source, and several people independently package GIMP for OS X and Windows. They each tweak the program slightly and they may include different plugins that extend GIMP's functionality. Three GIMP builds for OS X are listed here, but more may exist on GIMP's website.

    • "A stock GIMP build without any addons" from Sven Claussner. Available in the Downloads page of GIMP's website.

  • I have heard people call GIMP's icon a dog, a cat, a fox, a mouse, and even a raccoon. In truth, his name is Wilber, he's the GIMP mascot, and he is not intended to be a real animal.
